How can I develop my problem-solving skills?

Problem-solving is a significant part of any leader’s role and can involve dealing with both minor and major issues on an ongoing basis. Some problems require little thought, as the solution is fairly obvious – but make sure, even when faced with minor difficulties, that you choose the best, and not just the most obvious, or convenient, solution.

How can I develop my problem-solving skills?

At the other end of the scale, leader are regularly confronted by major problems – for these, you need to be very structured in your thinking.

Here are some key steps to keep in mind:

  • Identify the real problem: It sounds obvious that, to solve a problem, you need first to define what it is, but it is easy to fall into the trap of focusing more on symptoms, rather than the root cause.
  • Establish all the facts: Having defined the problem, then explore it in detail and learn as much about it as you can. You must consult, investigate, research and analyse it from all angles until you have the full picture – or as much of it as possible, given the time available to you for research.
  • Consider all the options: When the facts are known, then shift you focus to defining an appropriate solution. Avoid ‘straight-line’ thinking and a rush to the most obvious solution. This stage provides an ideal opportunity for creativity.
  • Establish the likely impact of each option: For each potential solution identified, evaluate the advantages and disadvantages, including both their likely immediate and longer-term impact.
  • Select and implement the best option: Having evaluated all the alternatives, select and plan the implementation of the agreed solution. And, afterwards, monitor progress and ensure that any blockages to implementation are dealt with effectively.
